In game one of the Thursday evening doubleheader, the Albertus Magnus baseball team used a six-run fourth inning to cruise to a 9-5 win over Western Connecticut State University in non-conference action in Danbury. Freshman Jordan Kubilus (Cheshire, Conn.) led the way for the Falcons with two hits and four RBI.
Western (6-12) led 5-1 after two innings before the Falcons scored two runs in the third to cut the Colonials' lead back down to two. With one out in the fourth, the Falcons loaded the bases before a Shane Osborn (Lake Worth, Fla.) walk plated the Falcons first run of the frame. Another walk by Robert Gambardella (North Haven, Conn.) tied the contest at five as Zak Sokolis (Meriden, Conn.) scored.
Kubilus followed with a single to right that allowed two Falcons to score as Albertus took a 7-5 lead. Justin Poirier (Meriden, Conn.) added another base hit to Albertus' tally as his single scored the Falcons eighth run of the ballgame as Gambardella scored. A double by Sage Leonard (Northford, Conn.) added another run for the Falcons, their ninth of the ballgame.
After giving up five runs in the first two innings, the Falcons went on to shutout the Colonials the rest of the way.
Chris Massimino (Wallingford, Conn.) earned the nod to start the contest before allowing five earned runs on eight hits in two innings of work. Christopher Saunders (Watertown, Conn.) came in out of the bullpen as he threw 4.2 innings, while walking three and allowing three hits. He earned the win for the Falcons to improve to 1-0 on the year. It was the sophomore's first appearance of the season.
Freshman Tyler Donnan (Meriden, Conn.) earned the save, his first of the season, as he struck out James Russell to end the game and secure the victory for the Falcons.
Sokolis, Anthony Pellegrino (Branford, Conn.), Kubilus and Porier each recorded two hits apiece for the Falcons in the win. Sokolis added two doubles and two runs scored.
