Falcons Sweep Coast Guard in Non-Conference Play

The Albertus Magnus baseball team cruised to a 12-3 win over Coast Guard on Thursday night in the first game of the day-night doubleheader in New London before completing the sweep of the Bears with a 3-1 six-inning victory.

The Falcons scored seven runs in the fourth inning in game one en route to the victory.

The Falcons (5-6) led 4-2 after three innings and had five hits and took advantage of five Coast Guard errors in the fourth to blow the game open taking an 11-2 lead.

Coast Guard took a 1-0 lead in the first on and RBI single by Kyle Wood.

The Falcons took the lead in the second on RBI singles by sophomore Sage Leonard (Northford, Conn.) and junior Tyler Robertson (Cheshire, Conn.).  The Bears tied it 2-2 in the second on an RBI single by Matt Hanks.

Albertus Magnus scored twice in the third as they took advantage of four walks with just one hit, an infield single by junior Anthony Pellegrino (Branford, Conn.). A run scored on a wild pitch while the other came across on a bases loaded walk to Pritchard for a 4-2 lead.

Senior Zak Sokolis (Meriden, Conn.) had a two-run single in the fourth before sophomore Jake Pritchard (Orange, Conn.) added an RBI double, the only two players to drive in runs in the inning. Five of the seven runs were unearned.

Freshman Aaron Macchia (Utica, N.Y.) improved to 1-1 on the year as he picked up his first collegiate win. He threw four innings of relief in the opener and allowed just two hits and an earned run while striking out two batters.

Coast Guard starter Sean Barry (0-1) took the loss in his first collegiate start as he allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits.  He walked three while striking out one.

Pritchard was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the win, while Robertson was 3-for-3. Sokolis added a pair of hits to lead the Falcons.

In the nightcap, the Falcons scored twice in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie en route to a 3-1 victory in a game called after six innings due to darkness.

In the fourth, Pellegrino led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a single by sophomore Jordan Kubilus (Cheshire, Conn.). Pritchard's grounder to short scored Pellegrino before Kubilus later scored on a double play.

Sophomore Mike Hughes (Norwalk, Conn.) improved to 1-0 on the year as he got the win in relief as he worked two innings and allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out one.

Senior Patrick Dornfield (Berlin, Conn.) had two hits to lead the Falcons in game two.

Albertus will open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play this weekend as the Falcons get set to host Anna Maria on Saturday in a league doubleheader.
