The Albertus Magnus baseball team defeated Yeshiva 7-4 on Friday in game one of its non-conference doubleheader at Purchase in New York. Jack Pritchard (Orange, Conn.) tallied two hits and two RBI to lead the Falcons, while Mike Hughes (Norwalk, Conn.) pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out five.
The Falcons took an early 2-0 lead out of the gate as Zak Sokolis (Meriden, Conn.) and Jordan Kubilus (Cheshire, Conn.) used back-to-back two-out singles and a fielding error to get one run across the plate. Pritchard capitalized with one runner on base as he doubled down the left field line to give Albertus the early advantage.
Yeshiva got one run back in the bottom of the second inning thanks to an RBI single by Davi Brick.
Albertus took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning as Sokolis drew a one-out walk before scoring from first on a Kubilus double to right center. After Yeshiva scored its second run of the game, Albertus tallied three runs in the seventh to extend its lead to 7-3. Sokolis once again contributed to the Falcons' offensive output as he singled up the middle to put runners on the corners. After a fielder's choice got the runner out at home, Pritchard tallied his second RBI of the contest with a single to left field.
Yeshiva added its final run in the bottom of the seventh as the host team tried to put together a late-inning rally. Kyle Soules (Wallingford, Conn.) walked one batter in the frame before forcing two-straight popups. After a walk and an RBI double by Zachary Perl, Mike Barillaro (Meriden, Conn.) came into the game to record the final out of the contest as well as his first save of the year.
Tyler Pohl (Milford, Conn.) came into the game out of the bullpen for the Falcons, while allowing one run on three hits. Tom Moore (East Haven, Conn.) followed by recording an out on his lone batter faced before Soules took over in the seventh.
Jonathan Gardner allowed seven runs, four of which were earned, on 10 hits in seven innings of work for Yeshiva. He walked three and struck out two in the loss.
