Falcons Split at Anna Maria

The Albertus Magnus baseball team split its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) series' opener on Tuesday afternoon against Anna Maria College. In game one, the Falcons put together a three-run seventh inning to come-from-behind to win 3-2 in their GNAC opener. In game two, Anna Maria defeated Albertus 7-2.

With the split, Albertus moves to 4-6 on the year and 1-1 in league action, while the AMCats move to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in GNAC play.

After Anna Maria scored one run in the first and another in the fourth, Albertus rallied in the final inning to earn the victory.  Albertus opened the inning with a walk before the Falcons' scored their first run on a double by Nick Sedia (Bronx, N.Y.). Three batters later, Jordan Kubilus (Cheshire, Conn.) and Justin Poirier (Meriden, Conn.) hit back-to-back singles to bat in two more runs for the Falcons as Poirier's single through the right side of the infield scored Anthony Pellegrino (Branford, Conn.) from second.

Sedia finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.

Anna Maria's Matthew Leahey toed the rubber for Anna Maria and threw six innings before facing one batter in the seventh.  He allowed three hits and allowed one run.  He also walked five and struck out 11.  Tanner Jakola took the loss as he gave up three hits and allowed two runs out of the bullpen.

Mike Barillaro (Meriden, Conn.) threw the complete game for the Falcons as he allowed seven hits and one walk, while striking out eight batters.

In game two of the day, Anna Maria registered nine hits, including four hits in the second.  The AMCats tallied three runs on those four hits to take the lead in the second inning. Albertus scored its two runs in the third inning as Mike Saia (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Tyler Graziano (Trumbull, Conn.) both walked and scored on an RBI single from Sedia.

Anna Maria took a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the third and secured the victory with a solo home run by Nate Frederick in the fourth inning.

Camden Frederick threw all seven innings for Anna Maria as he allowed just two hits with eight strikeouts.

Ryan Fowler (Cheshire, Conn.) took the loss for Albertus as he threw four innings.  Fowler gave up eight hits and seven runs as well as two walks.  He struck out three batters.

Albertus will play Coast Guard on Wednesday at URI in non-conference action. Game time is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
