Western Slips Past Falcons 3-2

The Albertus Magnus baseball team fell to Western Connecticut State University 3-2 on Thursday night in West Haven, Conn. as the Colonials scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning on a double by Chris Callahan.

Western (10-5) opened the contest with a two-run first inning as Matt Greene registered a two-run single.

The Falcons (8-10) cut the lead to one in the bottom of the frame as Nick Sedia (Bronx, N.Y.) singled to get on base before scoring on a Justin Poirier (Meriden, Conn.) double to right center.

Albertus tied the game at two in the bottom of the third inning as Sedia got on base with a walk before scoring on another Poirier double.  Poirier finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI and one walk. Sedia went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk.

In the top of the seventh, Western scored the game winner as Callahan tallied his fifth double of the season to score Gus Constantino from second.

Western's Josh Zurita earned the win for the Colonials as he improved to 1-1 on the year.  Zurita struck out three batters and walked three as he allowed two runs on four hits in six innings.  Rob Valunas came into the game and picked up the save, his second of the season, as he struck out the side.

Jon Criscio (East Haven, Conn.) earned the loss as he gave up five hits in six innings of work as he left the game after walking the leadoff batter in the top of the seventh.
