The Albertus Magnus baseball team came from behind 2-0 to defeat CCNY 8-4 on Saturday afternoon in West Haven, Conn. The Falcons (11-20) used a seven-run third inning to take control of the ballgame.
CCNY (13-16) scored two runs on three hits in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead. The Beavers were led in the frame by a double to deep left center by Ariel Torres. For Torres, it was just his second double of the season.
The Falcons made some noise in the bottom half of the frame as a walk and a bunt single put two runners on with no outs. After a strikeout, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position before senior Anthony Pellegrino (Branford, Conn.) loaded the bases with his team-leading 25th walk of the season.
With one out, Justin Poirier (Meriden, Conn.) singled to right center to score the Falcons' first run of the day before a walked by Steven Lockman (Wallingford, Conn.) tied the game at two.
Arber Mehmedi (Naugatuck, Conn.) hit the ball hard up the middle to score the go-ahead run as Pellegrino crossed the plate, giving Albertus a 3-2 lead. The Falcons continued to add runs as Mike Barillaro (Meriden, Conn.) was hit by a pitch and Brendan Russo (Centerville, Mass.) singled to give Albertus a 5-2 lead.
Tyler Robertson (Cheshire, Conn.) followed with a two-out single to plate two more runs for the Falcons as they jumped ahead 7-2.
Julian Irizarry took over on the hill for the Beavers with two outs in the frame and struck out the first batter he faced to get out of the inning.
CCNY's Jose Aquino gave up seven runs on five hits and four walks in 2.2 innings of work as he picked up the loss.
CCNY answered with two runs in the top of the fourth to cut their deficit to three runs at 7-4.
Albertus took an 8-4 lead in the fourth when Pellegrino hit his second home run of the season with a shot over the right field fence.
Mike Hughes (Norwalk, Conn.) pitched two innings after Jon Criscio (East Haven, Conn.), who made his fifth start on the season, came out of the game. Hughes allowed two hits and struck out three batters in two scoreless innings for the Falcons, while Criscio earned his first win of the season after allowing four runs on seven hits in four innings of work.
Nick Sedia (Bronx, N.Y.) came in to close out the game in the seventh as he allowed one run on one hit.
Russo, Mehmedi, Poirier and Robertson each recorded two hits, while Robertson added two RBI.
CCNY was led by a 3-for-4 performance from Ariel Torres.
