Baseball Weekly Preview: Coast Guard, Johnson & Wales & Purchase

Last Week: The Albertus Magnus College baseball team went 1-3 last week in non-conference action, dropping both ends of a twinbill at home to Elms before splitting a doubleheader at Westfield State over the weekend. Albertus Magnus enters the week with a 6-7 overall record. Prior to the games versus Elms, the Albertus Magnus athletic department held a special opening day ceremony at the newly renovated Rochford Field. Albertus Magnus College Trustee Ray Peach and town of Hamden Development Director Dale Kroop both threw out ceremonial first pitches.

This Week: The Falcons travel to play in-state rival Coast Guard in non-conference during the week before opening conference play with a road Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at Johnson & Wales on Saturday. AMC closes out the week with a non-conference doubleheader at home versus Purchase on Sunday.

Scouting Johnson & Wales: The Wildcats enter the week with a 9-4 overall record and are coming off a 3-2 home win against Keene State. Prior to hosing the Falcons on Saturday, JWU welcomes Wentworth to the Ocean State in non-conference action. As a team, they are hitting .280 to go along with a .385 on-base percentage. On the mound, Wildcat pitchers have amassed a 4.57 ERA and struck out 103 hitters in 1078 innings. Defensively, the squad has a .962 fielding percentage and has committed 19 errors in 13 games.

Scouting Purchase: The Panthers enter the week with a 5-11 record and are in the midst of a five-game losing streak. Prior to traveling to the Constitution State on Sunday, Purchase will play five games during the week. As a team, Purchase is hitting .252. Albertus Notes
- Falcon junior hurler Christopher Rivera tossed a complete game and scattered just four hits in a 1-0 setback against Elms last week. Rivera surrendered just one earned run, while retiring the side in order in the third, sixth and seventh innings. Down the stretch, the third-year righty retired the last eight batters he faced.
- Freshman shortstop Mike Browne hit .625 with a .700 on-base percentage as Albertus Magnus went 1-3 last week in non-conference action. Browne recorded two multi-hit games, three RBIs, one run scored and one stolen base. In a 1-0 setback versus Elms he registered two of the team's seven hits. He followed that up by going 1-for-2 with two walks and three RBIs in a 12-3 victory at Westfield State. Browned ended the week with a two-hit performance against the Owls. Defensively, he had a .947 fielding percentage in 19 total chances, highlighted by a career-high seven assists versus the Blazers.
- AMC is hitting .291 as a team this season with 24 extra-base hits, 10 stolen bases and 65 RBIs. Defensively, the Falcons have .939 fielding percentage and have committed 25 errors in 13 games.
