Falcons Swept by Saint Joseph's (ME) in Conference Doubleheader

New Haven, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College baseball team dropped a pair of home Great Northeast Athletic Conference games to Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Sunday afternoon at Rochford Field. The Falcons came up short in both games to the Monks by the scores of 7-5 and 10-7.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS (G1)

The Monks kicked off the doubleheader with one run advantage in the top of the first until the bottom of the third as back-to-back RBI's from Harris and Browne gave the Falcons the 2-1 edge.

Saint Joseph's came charging back scoring four runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead over the Falcons.

Albertus rallied in the bottom of the sixth scoring two runs on two hits and capitalized on a Monks' error to cut the lead to two, 6-4, but the Falcons stranded a runner on base following a pop up to second.  

Saint Joseph's tacked on an addition run in the top of the seventh extending its lead to three, 7-4, behind a solo home run from Kevin Aylward.

In the home half of the inning, Albertus threatened the Monks with runners on first and second as Browne drove in Daniel Kennedy (Manchester, Conn.) from second to bring the score to 7-5. With the runners on the corners, including the tying run on first, a fly out to center field by Brandon Clark (Cheshire, Conn.) ended the Falcons' comeback and game one.

KEY STATS (G1)
Albertus:

  • Junior Shawn McFeggan (Anaheim, Calif.) suffered his third loss of the season after allowing five runs on six hits while striking out two over three innings of work.
  • Browne led the Falcons with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.
  • Both Harris and Elijah Spataj (Cheshire, Conn.) posted two hits and a RBI each for the Falcons.

Saint Joseph's:

  • Alex D'Angelo earned his first win of the year while Troy Brogdahn picked up the save for the Monks.
  • Hunter Richardson and Anthony DiPrizio led the Monks with two hits.
  • Richardson also added two RBI to his stat line.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS (G2)

Albertus came out with vengeance in the night cap scoring two runs in the first and five runs in the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead over the Monks.

The Falcons started off the bottom of the first loading the bases before a RBI groundout from Matt Warren (Wolcott, Conn.) drove in Browne, who started off the Falcons' at bat with a walk, for the first run of the game. Despite a strikeout from Spataj, Joseph Matthews (Anaheim, Conn.) was able to score giving the hosts the 2-0 edge.

Despite two outs in the bottom of the second, Albertus continued to swing the bat and managed to score all five runs, including a three-run RBI triple from Spataj, before recording the final out of the inning.

Saint Joseph's started to make some noise in the top of the fourth as a solo home run from Hunter Richardson gave the visitors the spark needed to secure the comeback.

In the following inning, the Monks cut the deficit to within four, 7-3, before topping the Falcons 10-7 in game two after scoring an impressive seven runs in the sixth behind a pair of home runs from Kevin Aylward and Greg Emanuelson.

KEY STATS (G2)
Albertus:

  • Browne finished game two with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate to go along with two runs scored and a RBI.
  • Spataj also registered a two-hit performance for the Falcons as well as posted a team-high three RBI.
  • Junior Jay Palais (Farmington, Conn.) came in to relieve Brandon Fowler (Lexington, S.C.) in the top of the sixth and allowed six runs to score off four hits to earn his second second loss of the season.

Saint Joseph's:

  • Kristian Harris collected his first win of the season after tallying four hits, a walk and two strikeouts over five innings.
  • Three of the Monks' 12 hits came from home runs from Richardson, Emanuelson and Aylward.
  • Along with Aylward, Jared Gagne posted a team-high three RBI.
