Tarzia Nets First Goal of the Season in Loss with Simmons

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Melina Tarzia (Stamford, Conn.) tipped in her first goal of the season for the equalizer in the second period, but the Albertus Magnus College field hockey team dropped a 6-0 matchup against Great Northeast Athletic Conference foes Simmons University on Wednesday at Celetano Field.

Amber DeJonge (Grand Rapids, Mich.) recorded her first assist this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Less than four minutes into the opening quarter, Sydney Gonyea connects for the first Sharks goal off a feed from Hannah Groves from the right side of the circle.
  • Ella Welton (Cliffwood, N.J.) made three saves in the first period to keep the visitors from padding the score, including back-to-back saves during a scrum in front of the net.
  • After a foul by Simmons changed the pace of the game, DeJonge glides past a pair of defenders toward the goalkeeper as Tarzia tipped it in for the game-tying tally for the Falcons at 4:21 in the second period.
  • Less than a minute later, Ainslee Shrout attempted to regain the lead for the visitors, but Tarzia blocked the high shot from passing the posts.
  • Simmons tacked on five more goals across the remaining second half of action.
