Division I Quinnipiac Defeats Men's Basketball, 86-68

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team hung tough in today's contest against the Bobcats of Division I Quinnipiac University, falling by an 86-68 final score on Friday evening at the M&T Bank Arena in Hamden, Conn. 

Junior Antonio Bonilla (Tenafly, N.J.) and graduate student Terry Dawkins (Bronx, N.Y.) paced the Falcons' attack with 13 points each, while Jacqual Gertrude (Jersey City, N.J.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points. 

Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.) led the defensive attack for the blue-and-white as the junior center tallied three blocks to go along with five rebounds, a steal, and six points. Freshman Avery Hinnant (Naugatuck, Conn.) also served as a defensive threat tallying the Falcons' final block of the evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Quinnipiac controlled the opening four minutes of play as the Bobcats led by nine, 11-2, until a layup from Bryan Assie (Stamford, Conn.) sparked a 9-2 run that brought the Falcons to within two, 13-11.
  • The Bobcats countered the run with a short spurt of their own, 19-11, but a trey from Gertrude and a layup from Bonilla cut the deficit to three, 19-16, heading into a media timeout at 13:12.
  • Out of the short break, Quinnipiac capitalized on offense, pushing its lead to double-digits, 31-21, following a three from Matt Balanc.
  • Albertus chipped away at the double-digit deficit and found themselves down nine on two occasions, one at 6:01 and the other at 5:11.
  • Shortly after, Quinnipiac built up its double-digit lead and would head into the halftime break leading the Falcons by 12, 47-35. 
  • Albertus' offense kicked into high gear as the blue-and-white opened the second half with a 5-2 run, ignited by a three from Gertrude, to bring the score to within single digits, 49-40.
  • However, that was the closest the Falcons would get in the second half before falling to the Bobcats, 86-68.
  • Quinnipiac outscored the Falcons 39-33 in the second half as the Bobcats registered its largest lead of the night at the 9:09 mark when Balanc completed the three-point play to make it 73-52.
  • Dawkins had the hot hand for the Falcons in the second half, scoring 11 of his 13 points in the final 20 minutes of play.
  • Albertus finished the evening with 37 rebounds, while the Bobcats tallied 34.
