New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College men's lacrosse team fell to Mount Ida College, 22-11, in a GNAC showdown on Tuesday evening at Celentano Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was all Mount Ida in the first period as the Mustangs outscored the Falcons 9-2 heading into the second. James May (branford, Conn.) and Greg Buck (Berlin, Conn.) scored the Falcons' first two goals of the game just 50s second apart to cut the lead to five, 7-2.
Mount Ida continued to control the momentum of the game and managed to push its lead to 13, 16-3, heading into halftime. The Falcons only goal in the second period came at the 58 second mark as May found Justin Bennet (Fairfield, Conn.) for his first goal of the game.
Over the final 30 minutes of play, Albertus Magnus came together as a team and outscored the Mustangs 8-6 despite picking up the conference loss. Junior Brennan Moore (Meriden, Conn.) led the offensive attack in the third period with three goals while Buck added two of his own, cutting the lead to 12, 20-8.
Buck also recorded another impressive period scoring two goals in the fourth before Bennet scored the Falcons' final goal of the game with 1:21 remaining.
FINAL STATS
- In net, goalkeeper John Brunetti (West Haven, Conn.) recorded three saves for the Falcons as well as fell to 1-2 on the season.
- Junior Jack Kerner (Merrick, N.Y.) also made an appearance in goal for the Falcons and recorded 11 saves on 23 shots.
- Mount Ida was 21-of-37 in face off wins and 36-of-40 in clear attempts.
- Albertus Magnus finished the game with 48 grounds, 36 shots and 22 turnovers.
- The Falcons were led offensively by Greg Buck (Berlin, Conn.) who recorded five saves, nine shots on goal, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
- Senior Justin Bennet (Fairfield, Conn.) collected a team-high 12 ground balls as well as chipped in with two goals and three assists for five points.
