New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team topped visiting Brooklyn College, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Celentano Field.
The Falcons (1-1) saw three different players find the back of the net to take their first-ever meeting with the Bulldogs (0-2).
In net, Albertus Magnus sophomore goalkeeper Joe Russo (North Haven, Conn.) made six saves to earn his first clean sheet of the season and the third shutout of his young career. On the opposite end, freshman Jerron Streete turned aside six shots in a losing effort. However, Streete was tested more then Russo on the day and kept his team in the game with several point-blank stops.
Albertus Magnus threatened early in the contest with junior strikers Justyn Broderick (Orange, Conn.) and Ritchy Jean Pierre (Fairfield, Conn.) creating three scoring chances. Each time, their attempts sailed just wide or were stopped by Streete.
Neither side was able to break through during the first 45 minutes as the squads entered halftime scoreless.
During the second half, Albertus Magnus blew the game open with a trio of tallies en route to its first triumph of the season.
Broderick opened the scoring with his second of the season off a feed from Jean Pierre inside the penalty area. The duo broke out and Jean Pierre played a ball that Broderick finished into an open net in the 50th minute.
Eleven minutes later, sophomore Kaj Djonne (Sandy Hook, Conn.) gave the hosts a little breathing with a marker. Djonne's first career goal came on a header off a free kick from senior captain Alexis Garcia-Romero (West Haven, Conn.). Garcia-Romero delivered a perfect ball on a free kick from midfield in what would prove to be his first of two assists on the day.
Jean Pierre closed the scoring with his second strike of 2016. In the 65th minute, Garcia-Romero beat the man marking him in the box one-on-one with a nice move and fired a shot that was turned aside by Streete. Jean Pierre collected the rebound and found the empty to net to put the game out of reach.
The Falcons held a slight, 16-15, advantage in shots and took nine corners compared to just three for the Bulldogs. The physical contest saw 25 fouls called and one card handed out to the guests.
Broderick and Jean Pierre have now scored goals in two straight games for the Falcons and Albertus Magnus has had a player record two or more assists in each of their first two contests this autumn.
Albertus Magnus returns to action on Wednesday, September 7, with a home non-conference clash with Westfield State that is slated to begin at 7:00 pm. Last fall, the Falcons topped the Owls, 2-1, on the road.
