Men's Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision to Westfield State

Westfield, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team earned its first loss of the season as the Falcons fell to Westfield State, 2-0, on Thursday evening at Alumni Field in non-conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Westfield State opened the scoring in the 10th minute off the foot of Kyle Mutti from a well placed ball off the leg of junior Brodie Keene, who received the initial pass from senior Jimmy Murphy. The score would remain 1-0 at the end of the half with the hosts holding a 12-3 shots advantage.
 
In the 72nd minute, Luis Nieves would find the back of net after receiving a long cross from Ryan Morias to give the Owls the 2-0 lead eventually holding on to earn the shutout victory.
 
Between the pipes, junior Joe Russo (North Haven, Conn.) turned aside eight shots in the loss while Griffin Blum stopped three shots in the win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Freshman Salah Oumorou (West Haven, Conn.) recorded a team-high four shots while Jonathan Beaucejour (Wallingford, Conn.) and Diogo Cruz (Naugatuck, Conn.) added a shot a piece for the visitors.
  • Six different players for the Owls registered at least two or more shots, including a team-high five shots from Kyle Mutti.
  • Westfield State outshot Albertus Magnus 21-6 - including a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Albertus Magnus and Westfield State both registered five corner kicks.

Albertus Magnus is on the road this weekend as the Falcons open up GNAC play on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Suffolk University. Westfield State is also on the road this weekend against Springfield College.
