New London, N.H. - The fifth-seeded Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Friday afternoon with a 2-0 setback against fourth-seeded Colby Sawyer College in the quarterfinal match of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament. The Chargers move to 3-1-1 all-time against Albertus Magnus.

GNAC TOURNAMENT
Colby-Sawyer improves to 7-7-2 and advances to Tuesday's GNAC semifinal contest against the winner of tonight's other quarterfinal match between top-seeded and nationally ranked Saint Joseph's (ME) and eight-seeded Emmanuel. Albertus Magnus ends the season at 6-6-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

  • Albertus Magnus recorded one shot on goal over the first 45 minutes following a one-on-one break-a-way from sophomore Abdoul Aremu (West Haven, Conn.).
  • Senior Joe Russo (North Haven, Conn.) kept Colby Sawyer at bay as the keeper made three great saves in net for the Falcons.

Second Half:

  • Senior Tyler Saad (Naugatuck, Conn.) tried to put the Falcons up a goal following a header attempt, but the Chargers' keeper made the save in net to keep the score evened at zero.
  • Colby-Sawyer's Ethan Sweet broke a scoreless tie in the 69th minute with the game-winning goal.
  • Sweet took a touch five yards outside the 18-yard box and work around a defender to rip a ground ball shot into the left corner of the net past the dive of the Falcons keeper.
  • The Chargers added an insurance goal in the 87th minute off the foot of Jonathan Martinez.
  • The ball found Martinez after bouncing off multiple players in the box.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Colby-Sawyer held a 13-8 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
  • Sophomore Jonathan Beaucejour (Wallingford, Conn.) paced the Falcons' attack with a three shots while Aremu and Saad posted a shot on goal each.
  • Matt Schiller and Mason Galbato led the hosts in shots with three a piece.
  • Russo recorded all three saves of his saves in the first.
