Men’s Soccer's GNAC Clash with Dean Ends in 1-1 Tie

FRANKLIN, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-1 tie in its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road contest against Dean College at Lippert Field on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons' offense looked for a chance to get on the board early as the blue-and-white reeled off seven shot attempts, including two on shots goal from Kelvin Cortez (Meriden, Conn.) and one from Ben Pierce (Meriden, Conn.), over the first 16 minutes of play.
  • Solid defensive work from the Bulldog backline kept the Falcons' off the scoreboard and the score knotted at zero. 
  • In the 28th minute, after a failed clear attempt by the Falcon defense, Dean's Jake Richard sent a ball towards the lower right corner of the net, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Falcons looked to quickly respond to the Bulldogs' goal later in the stanza as both Cortez and Yahya Kardad (Wallingford, Conn.) each had opportunities to even the game, but the visitors headed into the halftime break trailing 1-0. 
  • The first 20 minutes of the second half were controlled by the Bulldogs, who outshot the visitors, 4-3.
  • The momentum slowly began to shift in favor of the Falcons as the blue-and-white recorded back-to-back shot attempts, less than two minutes apart, before Anthony Barreira (Trumbull, Conn.) connected on a thru ball from Cortez, evening the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute.
  • With the clock ticking down, Albertus was unable to bury a second goal despite holding the edge in shots and corner kicks, with the match ending in a 1-1 stalemate.
