Camden, N.J. – The Albertus Magnus College men's tennis team capped a busy day of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action with a 9-0 setback at Rutgers-Camden on Saturday afternoon at the Rutgers-Camden Community Park.
With their second straight GNAC setback, the Falcons move to 5-3 on the spring and 0-2 in league play, while the Scarlet Raptors snapped a three-match losing streak to improve 3-4 overall and 1-0 in conference matches.
In doubles action, Rutgers-Camden took the match at No. 2, 8-1, while the two league foes battled at No. 1 and No. 3. At the top, the AMC duo of senior Pete Zacharias (North Haven, Conn.) and classmate Mathew Mezzei (Wallingford, Conn.) dropped a 9-7 heartbreaker. The Falcons tandem of freshman Steven Woodfield (Naugatuck, Conn.) and senior Ahmed Abdulateef (Hamden, Conn.) fell, 8-5, in their match at No. 3.
The hosts took all six singles matches, four of which were straight-set wins, to win their league opener. Woodfield and Abdulateef both battled before dropping three-set thrillers at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
Albertus Magnus ends a weekend full of action tomorrow, April 17, with a home non-conference clash versus York at 1:00 pm. Sunday's match marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
