Falcons Fall in Five-Set Thriller to Mount Ida

The Mount Ida College Mustangs defeated the Albertus Magnus men's volleyball team 3-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Thursday night.

The set scores were 28-26, 25-21, 22-25, 25-27, 18-16.

With the loss, the Falcons fall to 8-15 on the year and 0-13 in GNAC play.  The Mustangs improve to 6-19 overall and 2-10 in league action.

Spencer Hastings led all players with 32 kills, while he hit .473 on the night and added 11 digs.  Justin Rhoden had 13 kills for Mount Ida as well.

Albertus was led by Glenn Johnson's (Newington, Conn.) 27 kills, 16 digs and five blocks.  Carlos Torres (Adjuntas, Puerto Rico) dished out 39 assists in the contest.

Both teams had solid hitting percentages on the night but in the end, the Mustangs pulled away with an 18-16 fifth-set victory.

In set one, the score was tied at 26 before a kill by Hastings and an Albertus attacking error secured the victory for the Mustangs.   In the second set, Mount Ida took a 13-9 lead before extending its advantage out to 22-14.  Albertus battled back but it wasn't enough as Kenny Jean ended the set with a kill.

Down 2-0, Albertus bounced back by winning the next two sets.

In the final set, Mount Ida led 8-4 before the Falcons were able to tie the set at 14.  Play went back and forth before back-to-back kills secured the match victory for the Mustangs.

Albertus will play in its final home match of the regular season on Saturday afternoon.  The Falcons will host Emmanuel at noon.
