Men's Volleyball Wins Home Opener 3-1 vs. Newbury

Raymond Torres (Catano, Puerto Rico) dished out a season-high 47 assists as the Albertus Magnus men's volleyball team defeated Newbury College 3-1 (25-14, 25-17, 27-29, 25-19)in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.

Torres added a team-high 12 digs to go along with four kills and two service aces.  Raul River Rojas (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) led the Falcons with 18 kills in 37 attempts, while Glenn Johnson (Newington, Conn.) and Brendan Charamut (Southington, Conn.) contributed 14 and 12 kills, respectively.

The Falcons won the first two sets before falling in a close third-set battle.  Newbury opened the third set with a 5-1 run before back-to-back Albertus kills cut the score to within three at 6-3.  Albertus took its first lead of the set at 8-7 and then led 10-7 but Newbury battled back to tie the frame at 14.

Play went back and forth until the Nighthawks took the 29-27 win for their first set victory of the season.

To open the fourth set, Albertus jumped out to a 3-1 lead before Newbury tied the score at five. A  Charamut kill gave the Falcons the ball back but the score remained close before Albertus extended its lead to 9-6 on another Charamut kill.

Newbury once again battled back tying the score at nine but Albertus answered with a 6-2 run to take a 19-13 advantage. The Falcons clinched match point on a kill by Rivera Rojas.

Newbury was led by 15 kills from Jake Powell and 33 assists from Patrick Robidoux.

Albertus returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 19 when the Falcons travel to Sarah Lawrence for a non-conference match-up.
