Albertus Falls to JWU 3-0

The Albertus Magnus men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Johnson & Wales (R.I.) on Sunday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.  With the loss, the Falcons fall to 1-3 on the year and 0-2 in league action.

J.J. Bessette led the Wildcats with 38 assists and two service aces, while three Wildcats tallied seven kills apiece to lead the way.  JWU improves to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in the league standings.

Albertus was led by eight kills from Glenn Johnson (Newington, Conn.) as he added four digs on the afternoon.

Justin Tharau (Burlington, Conn.) dished out 16 assists on the afternoon as well and added eight digs. Daniel Valmont (Orange, N.J.) added four kills, while Eric Woodcox (Burlington, Conn.) tallied three in 20 tries.

JWU controlled the first set, jumping out to a 7-2 lead before an Albertus timeout. Kanila Change tallied two kills during that span for the Wildcats. Albertus battled back to cut the lead to three at 9-6 before JWU pushed its lead back up to seven at 17-10.  The Wildcats used a kill by Brendan Baker to secure the 25-19 victory.

JWU opened the second set with a 9-4 run before another Albertus timeout. The Wildcats jumped out to a double-digit lead at 22-12 on a kill by Ryan Kennedy. They went to take a 25-16 victory.

In the final set, JWU jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks to strong serving by Bessette. Albertus attempted a comeback, making the score 14-11 on back-to-back hitting errors by the Wildcats. JWU went on to win the final set by a score of 25-14.

JWU finished with 46 kills in 95 tries, while the Falcons tallied 20 kills.

Matt Stoll (Shelton, Conn.) added five digs for the Falcons.

Albertus returns to action on Friday night when they head to CCNY for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
