CCNY Defeats Falcons 3-1 in Men’s Volleyball

Despite 16 kills Glenn Johnson (Newington, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus men's volleyball team fell to CCNY 3-1 in non-conference action on Friday night. After winning the opening set 25-21, the Beavers battled back to take set number two 25-19.  In the third set, the Beavers edged the Falcons 25-23 before winning the final set 25-17.

With the loss, the Falcons fall to 1-4 on the year, while CCNY improves to 2-4 overall.

Johnson tallied 16 kills in 39 tries, while adding three service aces and nine digs.

Justin Tharau (Burlington, Conn.) dished out 20 assists on the night to go along with seven digs. He also had two service aces. Ben Spilka (Redding, Conn.) was the next Falcon with five kills in 17 attempts as he added a team-best 10 digs.

Anthony Reyes led all players with 23 kills as he hit .275 on the night. He added four services and eight digs. Oleksandr Boychuk dealt an impressive 32 assists on the night as well.

After winning the first set, Albertus got behind in the second set as CCNY took advantage of several miscues to take, and then hold, the lead. The Falcons led 7-4 in the third set before CCNY rattled off five-straight points. In the end, a missed serve by CCNY put the Falcons in striking distance; behind just one at 24-23 but a kill by Reyes secured the set victory.

After getting the first point of the final set on a kill by Johnson, CCNY took over with a 4-1 lead before pushing it out to a five-point advantage at 8-3. Albertus continued to battle but the Beavers would not give up the lead, eventually winning 25-17.

Albertus cut the CCNY lead to two at 19-17 but the Beavers closed out the match with six-straight points, led by strong serving from Jeffrey Lin. 

The Falcons return to action on Monday, Feb. 23 in a 7:00 p.m. match at Newbury College.
