Volleyball Falls at Home to Emerson in Conference Play

New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College men's volleyball team fell to visiting Emerson, 3-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at The Nest inside the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center. The Lions earned their second league win of the year by a score of 25-11, 25-20, and 25-19.

With their second straight setback, the Falcons move to 5-6 on the year and 0-4 in conference play, while Emerson improved to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in GNAC tilts.

Senior outside hitter Justin Tharau (Burlington, Conn.) paced the attack for the hosts with a 11 kills and 10 digs. Tharau registered a team-high .267 attack percentage to go along with one service ace. Junior middle hitter Josh Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) added two kills, three block solos, one block assist and five digs, while senior outside hitter Ben Spilka (Redding, Conn.) contributed six kills and nine digs for AMC. In the middle, Falcon freshman setter Jeremy Ortiz (Bridgeport, Conn.) dished out 19 assists to go along with eight digs and two service aces.

The balanced Emerson attack saw five different players record six or more kills in the shutout win. Senior outside hitter Jackson Wiley led the charge for the guests, with a team-high 11 kills with a .286 attack percentage. Freshman middle blocker Win Kittivatcharapong netted seven kills an added a match-best three block assists. Senior setter Brendan McGonigle did a good job of distributing the ball for the Lions, recording a match-high 34 assists.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Thursday, March 10, with a road conference clash against Lasell at 6:00 pm. The Falcons will look to avenge a home defeat versus the Lasers earlier this year.
