Falcons Rally to Defeat Becker 6-3

The Albertus Magnus softball team came from behind to defeat Becker College 6-3 in their first game of their Wednesday morning double-header in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Falcons took an early 2-0 lead right out of the gate before Becker took a 3-2 advantage in bottom of the frame. Albertus scored two runs in the third inning to take back the lead then added an insurance run in the fourth to make the score 5-3. In the seventh, the Falcons extended their advantage with their sixth run of the contest.

In the top of the first, freshman Brittney Urciuoli (Newington, Conn.) recorded a bunt single then stole both second and third to get into scoring position for the Falcons. She later scored on a Becker error. Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, Conn.) scored right behind Urciuoli as she reached base on Becker's first error of the contest, by the Hawks' starting pitcher.

Becker tallied three runs in the first inning as the Hawks' first run of the contest came off of an Albertus error. Talan Barron put the Hawks in the lead as she recorded a two-run home run over the left field wall.

In the third, Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) registered an RBI single before scoring on a double from Aimee Mirto (Hamden, Conn.) to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead. The Falcons' insurance run came in the top of the fourth as Leyna Andren (Manahawkin, N.J.) scored an unearned run on an Urciuoli infield single.

After taking the 5-3 lead, the Falcons added their final run of the contest in the top of the seventh inning to clinch the victory. Freshman Rebecca Slivinsky (Plainville, Conn.) connected on an RBI single to center to score Jeslyne Santos (New York, N.Y.) from third after Santos stole third to get into scoring position.

Albertus' Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn.) started on the mound and went two innings as she allowed four hits, one walk and three earned runs. Freshman Danielle Thuerling (Wallingford, Conn.) came in out of the bullpen and allowed six hits in six shutout innings of work to earn the win.

Urciuoli led Albertus with a 3-for-4 performance with two runs scored and one RBI. Maio had a hit, a run scored and an RBI, while Slivinsky and Mirto added a hit and an RBI for the Falcons as well.
