Falcons Fall to Monks 6-2 in GNAC Opener

The Albertus Magnus softball team dropped a 6-2 decision to St. Joseph's College of Maine in its 2013 home opener on Saturday night in West Haven, Conn.  The contest also served as the Falcons' Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener as their double-header against Suffolk, scheduled for Friday night, was postponed.

St. Joseph's used a four-run fifth inning to take control of the contest, while Connie Grovo recorded a 4-for-4 performance along with an RBI to lead the Monks (9-2, 1-0 GNAC).  Kayla Vannah earned the win on the hill for the Monks as she allowed one earned run and seven hits along with four strikeouts.

Freshman Veronica Hribko (East Haven, Conn.) led the Falcons with a 2-for-4 outing along with one run and one RBI.  Jackie Medina picked up the loss in the contest as she allowed nine hits and five earned runs but struck out five.

The Monks scored first in the top of the first inning before the Falcons took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single by Hribko which scored freshman Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.). The Falcons' go ahead run came as Hribko scored on a triple by Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.).

The Monks tallied four runs in the fifth on four hits, including an RBI double by Lindsay Moore which scored two teammates.  St. Joseph's added another run in the sixth thanks to a Grovo RBI single.
