Softball Ends Spring Break Trip with Two Wins on St. Patrick's Day

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team ended its 2017 spring break trip in the Palmetto State with two wins on Friday morning at the NMB Sports Complex in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Falcons took game one from in-state foe Saint Joseph's College, 14-5, before edging past Keystone, 5-4, to wrap up the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 2nd Inning – Saint Joseph's jumped out to the early 2-0 lead after the Blue Jays scored two runs in the top of second off an error by the center fielder and a RBI single to center.

(B) 2nd Inning – Albertus Magnus answered back scoring four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 lead over the Blue Jays. With one out and bases loaded, Megan Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) began the rally allowing three runners to score off a line drive double to centerfield before Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) singled to left field letting Kelly come home.

(T) 3rd Inning – The Blue Jays cut the Falcons lead to one, 4-3, as Rachel Dube hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bring home Morgan Skoly.

(B) 3rd Inning – Bats came alive in the bottom of the third as the Falcons scored a total of 10 runs to extend its lead to nine, 14-3. With one out, Albertus Magnus scored nine runs before Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) recorded the second out of the inning. However, Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) tallied the Falcons 14th run after she crossed home following a walk.

(T) 5th Inning – Saint Joseph's tried to make a comeback in the top of fifth, but the Blue Jays were only able to score two runs before the final two outs were collected.

GAME 2 SCORE: Albertus Magnus 5 | Keystone 4

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 1st Inning – Albertus Magnus took control early, opening the game witht the quick 2-0 lead after Fortier scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Castillo. With one out, Marissa Gugliemi (Branford, Conn.) singled to left field allowing Amanda Jessey (East Haven, Conn.) to score before the final two outs were collected.

(B) 4th Inning – Keystone scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take its first lead of the game, 4-2. Keystone's big inning was driven by a single by Shannon Dermont, a groundout by Mariah Loughney, and a single by Kaylee Hartman.

(T) 5th Inning  With two outs and no runners on, Kelly began the Falcons' rally reaching first base before Fortier singled to right field, advancing Kelly to third. Lauren Anderson came up to the plate and hit the ball to center field, allowing both Kelly and Fortier to score, tieing the game at 4-4. Castillo allowed the game-winning run to score as she hit a hard ground ball to short letting Anderson cross home.
