Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader to Mt. St. Vincent

New York, N.Y. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team split with the College of Mt. St. Vincent in non-conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Randall's Island Field No. 29. The Falcons' nine-game winning streak came to an end after falling 9-4 in game one, but the visitors bounced back in the night cap, edging the Dolphins 15-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 1ST INNING – Albertus Magnus struck first with an RBI double from Daysia Wehder (Bronx, N.Y.) to give the Falcons the early 1-0 edge. Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) led off the inning with a double to right field before Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) and Laura Anderson (East Haven, Conn.) collected back-to-back outs. With two outs, Wehder would pick up the rally with a double to right field, but the Falcons' inning came to an end with a foul out to first.

(B) 1st INNING – Mt. St. Vincent took over the lead a half inning later as the Dolphins scored three runs on four hits to take a 3-1 lead.

(T) 3rd INNING – The Falcons cut the hosts' lead to within one, 3-2, thanks to another RBI from Wehder, this time allowing Whitfield to cross home and advancing Anderson to second. However, the Falcons went down 1-2-3 ending the rally and leaving two runners on base.

(B) 3rd INNING – Mt. St. Vincent recorded another impressive inning scoring two runs to extend its lead three, 5-2. Mackenzie Heizer drove in both runs for the Dolphins as she hit a deep ball over the center field fence for the first home run of the game.

(B) 5th INNING – Two innings later, Mt. St. Vincent recorded another three run inning to push its lead to 8-2.

(B) 6th INNING – Taylor Milata tacked on an extra run for the hosts, pushing its lead to seven, 9-2, following a sacrifice fly to right field to allow Heizer to score.

(T) 7th INNING – The Falcons' final threat of the game came in the top of the seventh as Fortier recorded her third straight home run of the season and drove in the final two runs of the game. Samantha Maselli (Rockville Center, N.Y.) began the inning with a double to left center, but Aliza Esposito would earn the first out of the inning with a pop up to first. Up next, Fortier connected on a pitch that would lead her to her seventh home run of the season, but the rally ended with a lined out to second and short stop, respectively.

INSIDE THE STATS

  • Cunning picked up the loss on the mound for the Falcons and fell to 0-2 on the season.
  • Four different players registered at least two hits for the Falcons while Fortier and Wehder led the team with two RBI a piece.
  • Albertus Magnus finished the game going 10-of-28 at the plate.
  • Mt. St. Vincent was led by Alanna Alioto-Reyes and Katie Moos who recorded a team-high three hits.
  • Four different players from Mt. St. Vincent recorded a team-high two RBI each while the team went 15-of-31 at the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 1st INNING – Similar to game one, the Falcons took the early edge over the hosts this time scoring two runs in the top of the first thanks to a two-run RBI single from Wehder.

(B) 2nd INNING – Bats came alive in the bottom of the second as the Dolphins scored seven runs on four hits and a Falcon error to take a commanding 7-2 lead.

(T) 3rd INNING – Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) brought the visitors to within four, 7-3, after the junior recorded her fourth home run of the season.

(T) 4th INNING – An inning later, Albertus Magnus continued to swing the bat and managed to take a one-run lead, 8-7, over Mt. St. Vincent after scoring five runs on five hits.

(B) 4th INNING – Katie Moos tied the game at 8-all in the following half inning as she singled to left field allowing the tying run to score.

(T) 5th INNING – Albertus Magnus kept swinging the bat and found themselves up 14-8 after a thrilling six-run inning. Despite facing a new pitcher, Albertus Magnius never backed down as the Falcons scored all six-runs before collecting the second out of the inning.

(B) 5th INNING – Mt. St. Vincent could not get a rally going in the bottom of the fifth, but managed to score one run to at least cut the deficit to five, 14-9.

(T) 7th INNING - Wehder tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh, pushing the Falcons lead back up to six, 15-9. With one out, Wehder hit a bomb over the right field fence to record her fourth home run of the season.

(B)  7th INNING - The Dolphins were unable to get a rally going in their last at bat and were only able to score one-run, giving the Falcons the "W" in the night cap.

INSIDE THE STATS

  • Following today's win, Gladden remains undefeated on the season with a 2-0 record.
  • Anderson also made an appearance on the mound for the Falcons after she relieved Gladden in seventh. Anderson allowed one run on three hits and walked a batter.
  • The Falcons were 15-of-38 at the plate while the Dolphins 17-of-36.
  • Along with Wehder, Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) led the visitors with three hits each and Castillo also led the team with three runs scored.
