Softball Opens 2018 with 8-0 Win Over Alfred State

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team opened the 2018 season with an 8-0 win over Alfred State Sunday afternoon in non-conference play as part of the Fastpitch Dreams Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Albertus Magnus opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as freshman Fallon Speers (East Haven, Conn.) crossed home on a wild pitch by Alfred State's Betsy Butlak, giving the Falcons the early lead.

An inning later, the Falcons struck again this time scoring two runs, pushing their lead to three, 3-0, thanks to an RBI sacrifice bunt from Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) and a single RBI from Laura Anderson (East Haven, Conn.).

Albertus Magnus continued to swing the bat as the Falcons tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the fourth, extending their lead to eight, 8-0, as well as securing the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Junior Shayla Gladden (Springfield, Mass.) also made an appearance on the mound for the Falcons, posting two hits over an inning pitched.
  • Six different players from Albertus Magnus registered at least a hit, while Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Aliza Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) posted a team-best two hits apiece.
  • Alfred State went 5-of-20 against the Falcons' bullpen as well as recorded two strikeouts and no walks.
  • Albertus Magnus went 6-of-17 at the plate and manage to record four RBI.

NOTEWORTHY

  • The Falcons are now 1-0 against Alfred State.
  • Following today's win on the mound, Ferraro pushes her career win total to 39.
