Softball Splits a Pair of Non-Conference Games to Mount Aloysius and Fitchburg State

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team split a pair of non-conference games to Mount Aloysius and Fitchburg State on Sunday afternoon as part of the Fastpitch Dreams Classic.

The Falcons opened 2019 with a 6-5 walk-off win over Mount Aloysius, but fell 9-6 to Fitchburg State in the night cap.

WHAT HAPPENED (Game 1)

The Falcons edged past the Mounties with walk off single by freshman Kayla Resto (Shelton, Conn.).

Despite two outs, freshman Erin Dighello (Wallingford, Conn.) started off the inning with a single to center field before senior Maxine Sanchez (Corona, N.Y.) moved Dighello to send on a error by the Mounties. With runners on second and third, Resto singled down the left field line that allowed Dighello to score to give the Falcons the walk-off win.

KEY STATS (Game 1)

  • Dighello also earned the win on the mound after keeping the Mounties in the top of the seventh.
  • Albertus was led offensively at the plate by freshman Jess Stettinger (East Haven, Conn.) who posted a team-high three hits and two RBI.
  • Sophomore Aubrey DeFoe (Watertown, Conn.) and senior Kristin Cunning (Hoboken, N.J.) posted two hits apiece while Cunning tallied one of the Falcons' five RBI.

WHAT HAPPENED (Game 2)

Albertus maintained the lead, 6-2, until the top of the fifth as Fitchburg State recorded back-to-back three-run innings and tacked on an additional run in the seventh to seal the win, 9-6.

KEY STATS (Game 2)

  • Dighello picked up the loss on the mound and falls to 1-1 on the year.
  • Five different Falcons recorded two hits.
  • Sophomore Kayla Gosselin (Milford, Conn.) led the offensive attack with two RBI off a sacrifice bunt in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third.

Albertus returns to the diamond on Monday, March 11 with a non-conference tilt against Penn College as part of the Fastpitch Dreams Classic. First pitch is set for 3:30pm in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
