Coast Guard Takes Two from Softball

New London, Conn. – Freshman Jess Stettinger (East Haven, Conn.) and junior Laura Anderson (East Haven, Conn.) of the Albertus Magnus College softball team combined for three home runs in the Falcons' doubleheader loss to Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS (G1)

The Bears took a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Claire Hurley scored on a passed ball and Sharayah Simco hit an RBI single.

In the top of the third Stettinger hit a two-run homer to tie the game 2-2 for Albertus, but Simco hit a homer to right field to give the Bears a 3-2 lead at the bottom of the third.

Albertus tied it back up 3-3 in the top of the fourth on a SAC fly by Marissa Guglielmi (Branford, Conn.) that sent Kristin Cunning (Hoboken, N.J.) in to score. In the home half of the inning, Hurley grounded out in a double play that sent Perez home and Courtney McKenna had an RBI single as the Bears took a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Falcons scored three unearned runs to take a 6-5 lead over the Bears. However, Coast Guard tied it 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth as Perez grounded out to send Audrey Bartz home.

Stettinger hit her second home run of the day at the top of the sixth to give the Falcons a 7-6 edge.

Simco answered with her second home run of the day, a three-run home run for the Bears to take the lead back, 9-7.

KEY STATS (G1)

  • Along with her two home runs, Stettinger finished with two runs scored and three RBI.
  • Senior Sharayah Simco (3-for-4) hit two home runs and had five RBI's to lead the Bears.
  • Coast Guard's Sydney Arendt pitched all seven innings in the win with four strikeouts and improves to 7-7 on the season.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS (G2)

Anderson hit a home run in the top of the first to give Albertus their only score of the game.

Bartz hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first to tie it 1-1.

In the bottom of the second, Hurley reached on a fielding error that sent Noelle Greenwood home for a 2-1 lead. McKenna followed with a two-run single to extend the Bears lead 4-1.

Malia Hindle had a SAC fly sending Simco home in the bottom of the third to give the Bears a 5-1 lead.

The Bears scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to secure the doubleheader sweep, 8-1. 

KEY STATS (G2)

  • Julia Ferris earned her ninth win of the season for the Bears.
  • Courtney McKenna led the Bears' attack with three hits and two RBI while Audrey Bartz went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
  • Four different players from Albertus registered a hit.

Albertus resumes GNAC play this week with back-to-back road doubleheaders against Anna Maria and Johnson & Wales. The Falcons battle on the AMCATS on Saturday, April 13 at 12:00PM and 2:00PM before facing the Wildcats on Sunday, April 14 at 12:00PM and 2:00PM.
