Women's Basketball Defeats Wilson in Non-Conference Play

Madison, N.J. - Behind a trio double-digit performances from junior Jill Johnson (North Haven, Conn.), junior Kristen Cunning (Hoboken, Conn.) and senior Olivia Bolden (South Windsor, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team defeated Wilson, 79-63, Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Rose City Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Albertus Magnus controlled the first half of the game outshooting the Phoenix in both quarters to take a 40-29 lead at the half. The Falcons opened the game with the quick 10-4 lead before doubling their lead, 14-7, following a three-pointer from senior Angelina Piccirillo (Naugatuck, Conn.). AMC would close out the first with an 11-4 run and carry it over into the second. Wilson continued to chip away at the double-digit lead, but would trail Albertus Magnus at the half.
 
The Falcons' defense kept the Phoenix at bay allowing them to score only eight points in the third and would hold a 61-37 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play. Wilson came out with venegance in the fourth as the Phoenix outscored the Falcons, 26-18, and fought back to within 14, 77-63, but it wasn't enough to earn the come from behind win.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Freshman Andreah Orr (Danbury, Conn.) led the defensive unit for the Falcons as the rookie posted a career-high five of the Falcons' seven blocks to go along with five points and five rebounds.
  • Albertus Magnus earns its first win over Wilson in the all-time series following today's win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Johnson scored 15 of her 19 points in the first half behind a 7-of-16 performance from the floor and 4-of-6 showing at the line.
  • Bolden recorded her third straight double-double of the season, 13 points and 12 rebounds, as well as added two assists, a block and a steal.
  • Cunning posted a season-high 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and a game-high four steals.
  • The Phoenix also had three players score in double figures, including a team-high 19 points from Jordyn Day.
  • Jasmine Wallace also scored in double figures for Wilson as well as added a double-double to her stat line, 12 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Albertus Magnus and Wilson both recorded a total of 50 rebounds, while the Falcons held a 15-12 edge in offensive turnovers.
  • Albertus Magnus - 37.5 percent (field), 18.2 percent (three-point) and 63.6 percent (free throw)
  • Wilson - 32.2 percent (field), 25 percent (three-point range) and 69 percent (free throw)
  • The Falcons forced 23 Phoenix turnovers and 13 of those turnovers were steals.
  • Albertus Magnus posted a 22-5 edge in points off turnovers.
