Falcons Edged by Colby-Sawyer, 13-7

New London, N.H. – Junior Kaitlyn Ellsworth (Tolland, Conn.) recorded a team-high five points behind three goals and an assists as the Albertus Magnus College women's lacrosse team fell on the road to Colby-Sawyer College, 13-7, on Saturday afternoon at Veitch Turf Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The visitors scored the first two goals of the contest to lead 2-0 after six minutes. Junior Kaitlin D'Agostino (Hamden, Conn.) netted the first of the game for Albertus on a free position shot before Ellsworth found the back of the net on a feed from Maddy Rowe (Branford, Conn.) putting the Falcons up a pair.

The Chargers answered back with goals by Sarah Morin and Briana Couture to tie the game at 2-2 with 19:29 left. Albertus Magnus quickly regained the advantage, 34 seconds later, with Ellsworth's second goal of the half.

The Chargers regrouped and took control of the game in the final 15 minutes of the first frame. Couture scored three times, during a 6-0 run for the Chargers, as the home team took an 8-3 lead. Freshman Madison Neilander (Wallingford, Conn.) got a goal back for the Falcons, but Colby-Sawyer would take an 8-4 lead into the halftime break.

Colby-Sawyer saw its lead grow to six, 10-4, as goals from Sierra Schuster and Allison Piracini kicked off the second stanza. Midway through the half, Albertus Magnus found the back of the net off the stick of D'Agostino, but the Chargers outscored the Falcons 3-2 down the stretch to secure the 13-7 victory. 

KEY PERFORMERS
Albertus:

  • Junior Korina Zelaya (Trumbull, Conn.) and Neilander led the defensive attack with three caused turnovers.
  • Both D'Agostino and Neilander won five draw controls for Albertus.
  • Zelaya and Alexis Lape (Bristol, Conn.) each scooped up four ground balls.

Colby-Sawyer:

  • Briana Couture paced the Chargers' offense with five goals behind 13 shot attempts.
  • Brittany Ireland won four of the Chargers 10 draw controls as well as recorded three goals, an assists and three ground balls.
  • Six different players registered at least two caused turnovers, including three from Jess Tattersall and Madison Johansson.
  • Sarah Morin also recorded a hat trick for the hosts.
