Women's Lacrosse Tops Anna Maria on Senior Day

New Haven, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College women's lacrosse team closed out the 2019 regular season with a 15-5 home victory over Anna Maria College Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Senior Day.

Prior to the start of game, the women's lacrosse team honored its three-member senior class - Lexie Fenn (Oakville, Conn.), Grace Vestro (Waterbury, Conn.) and Sasha Byrd (Hamden, Conn.). These three student-athletes have been key contributors to the Falcons' success during their tenure here with the squad and have helped the team improve each season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Anna Maria struck first at the 28:22 mark as Bryce McDonald found the back of the net against Falcons' keeper Lexie Fenn (Oakville, Conn.). Midway through the stanza, the AMCATS tripled their lead, 3-0, until back-to-back goals from Kaitlin D'Agostino (Hamden, Conn.) brought the Falcons to within one, 3-2, heading into halftime.

Similar to the first, McDonald scored the first goal of the half doubling the visitors lead to 4-2 before a goal from Alexis Lape (Bristol, Conn.) sparked a 4-0 run that gave the Falcons their first lead of the day, 6-4.

McDonald snapped the hosts' run as well as brought the score to within one, 6-5, with 13:27 left to play, but Albertus answered back on offense closing out regulation with nine straight goals, including four from Korina Zelaya (Trumbull, Conn.) and three from Kaitlyn Ellsworth (Tolland, Conn.), to secure the home victory.

KEY PERFORMERS
Albertus:

  • Zelaya led the Falcons with four goals to go along with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.
  • Along with her goal, freshman Madison Neilander (Wallingford, Conn.) collected five draw controls, five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
  • D'Agostino won eight draw controls, scooped up seven ground balls and caused a turnover.
  • Byrd registered her first collegiate point after picking up the assist on Maddy Rowe's (Branford, Conn.) second-half goal.

Anna Maria:

  • McDonald finished with a team-high three goals as well as tallied a ground ball and a caused turnover.
  • Ashley Rufo led the defensive unit with a pair of caused turnovers.
  • Both Niamh Cote and Georgia McLellan won three draw controls each.
