Women’s Soccer Suffers 2-0 Setback to Worcester State

The Albertus Magnus women's soccer team fell to Worcester State 2-0 in the Falcons' 2013 season opener in New Haven on Saturday afternoon.

The Lancers scored early in the first half as Shelby Archer gave her team 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of play.  Archer drilled a shot from the top of the 18-yard box just out of the reach of Albertus sophomore keeper Maria Case (West Haven, Conn.).  For Archer, it was her first goal of the year.

At the half, both teams had 10 shots registered as well as four saves for their keepers.

In the second half, Laura Maunsell tallied the Lancers' second goal of the contest as she redirected a Nicole Parenteau free kick into the back of the net.

Case finished the contest with seven saves, while Worcester State's Jillian Witkowski tallied five saves in the shutout.

Shelley Mirmina (Milford, Conn.) led all players with eight shots, including three on goal, while the Falcons finished the game with 16 total shots.

Albertus will face Bard on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1:00 p.m.  Bard will open the 2013 season against the Falcons.
