Auburndale, Mass. – The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team ended the 2015 regular season with a pair of losses in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match versus Johnson & Wales and Lasell on Friday evening inside the Athletic Center Gym. The Falcons fell to the Wildcats, 3-0 in the opener before dropping the finale, 3-0, against the host Lasers.
Albertus Magnus concludes the year with 5-18 overall record and currently sits in 11th-place in the GNAC with a 1-10 mark in conference play. JWU swept the tri-match to improve to 20-7 on the year and 10-1 in league matches, while Lasell moved to 11-22 overall with the split and 6-5 in GNAC tilts.
In the opener, Johnson & Wales topped Albertus Magnus by a score of 25-15, 25-12, 25-12. Junior outside hitter Amber Cohens (Hamden, Conn.) paced the Falcon attack in the match, recording six kills, while sophomore middle hitter Ana Gomez (New Haven, Conn.) and freshman middle hitter Megan Gritz (Milford, Conn.) added five apiece. The setting duo of sophomore Marielis Muriel (New Haven, Conn.) and senior Ramona Onofrio (East Haven, Conn.) combined for 16 assists in the setback. On the defensive end, Muriel led the way with 10 digs and Gomez contributed nine. The balanced defensive effort saw five Falcons record seven or more digs.
During the nightcap, Lasell earned a 25-17, 25-7, 25-18 triumph on Senior Night. Gritz and Gomez led the way on the offensive end for the visitors, combining for 13 kills and being responsible for 15 of the team's 21 points. Defensively, Gomez netted the squads only block and three AMC players registered 10 or more digs led by freshman libero Megan Warnke (Naugatuck, Conn.).
On the day, AMC produced 35 kills, nine service aces, 31 assists and 107 digs. In each contest, the team registered 21.0 points apiece.
The match marked the final collegiate contest for Onofrio, as the Falcons did not qualify for the conference post-season tournament.
