Women's Volleyball Drops Five-Set Thriller Versus SUNY Cobleskill

Chicopee, Mass. – The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team closed out its opening weekend of play with a 3-2 setback versus SUNY Cobleskill in non-conference action inside Picknelly Arena. The Fighting Tigers rallied to score a 25-20, 24-26, 16-25, 25-23 and 15-9 triumph against the Falcons on the final day of play of the Blazer Invitational hosted by Elms.

SUNY Cobleskill (2-0) has now won four straight matches against Albertus Magnus (2-1).

As a team, the Falcons produced 34 kills, 10 service aces and 93 digs.

Junior middle hitter Ana Gomez (New Haven, Conn.) once again paced the AMC attack with a match-best 13 kills to go along with seven digs and two total blocks (1BS, 2BA). In total, she accounted for 15 points. Senior outside hitter Amber Cohens (Hamden, Conn.) had another quality performance for the Falcons, chipping in a season-best 10 kills, while adding a match-high two solo blocks. Junior defensive specialist Marielis Muriel (New Haven, Conn.) had a strong game in the middle for Albertus Magnus with 27 assists and a career-best 19 digs.

Defensively, the 93 digs the Falcons accumulated were the most for the team since August of 2012. Freshman libero Nashalie Bayona (New Haven, Conn.) had a career day, racking up match-high 23 digs. Four other Falcons had double-digit dig totals with both Muriel and freshman Tatiana Hernandez (New Haven, Conn.) registering 19 apiece.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Tuesday, September 6, with a non-conference road match at New Jersey City College that is slated to get underway at 6:30 pm. The tilt will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
