Women's Volleyball Drops Non-Conference Showdown with Mitchell

New London, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision on the road versus in-state rival Mitchell on Thursday evening at Yarnall Gymnasium in non-conference action. For the second straight year, the Mariners swept the season series with the Falcons, taking today's contest, 25-17, 25-19, 25-17.

The Mitchell offensive attack was spearheaded by junior Myia Williams (Roselle, N.J.) who led the Mariners with eight kills. Senior captain Amanda Rowan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) was close behind with seven kills for the Mariners while junior Janelle Rice (Meriden, Conn.) had a game-high 20 assists to go along with two service aces.   

On the defensive side of the game sophomore libero Colby Zitoli (Walpole, Mass.) had a game-high 15 digs, while AMC's Ashley David (West Islip, N.Y.) led the team with 11 digs. Junior Italia Krick (Griswold, Conn.) and Williams each picked up seven digs apiece for the Mariners, while Falcons freshman Jesselle Guzman (Santa Teresa, N.M.) chipped in with eight digs herself.  

 Falcon junior Ana Gomez (New Haven, Conn.) had a game-high 10 kills to go along with six digs and a block solo. Senior outside hitter Amber Cohens (Hamden, Conn.) and David chipped in with four kills and three kills to help on the offensive end for the guests. Junior setter Marielis Muriel (New Haven, Conn.) led the Falcons with 17 assists and three service aces which was also a game high.

 In the first set of the night the Mariners were clinging to a one-point lead until Rice stepped up to serve and helped the Mariners close out the Falcons after five straight points that included two service aces. In the beginning of the second set the Falcons jumped out to a 9-3 advantage led by Muriel, who served the Falcons to six consecutive points with three service aces scattered in. Mitchell countered with four points won with Williams serving and three more immediately followed by Megan Elphick (Waterford, Conn.) which tied the score at 12 and helped pace the Mariners to a second set victory.

 In the final set the Mariners had their most kills (9) and fewest errors (4) in any set of the night.

Albertus Magnus returns to action tomorrow, Friday, September 23, with a home Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) showdown versus Norwich inside the Nest. Last autumn, the Falcons topped the Cadets on the road.
