New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team split a non-conference tri-match against visiting New Rochelle and Medgar Evers on Saturday afternoon at The Nest inside the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center.

The Falcons (5-10) fell to the Blue Angels, 3-0, in the opener before taking down the Cougars, 3-0, in the finale. New Rochelle (7-8) topped Medgar Evers (0-15) in the second match of the day.

New Rochelle controlled the tempo and the pace in the opener en route to a 3-0 triumph against the host Falcons. The Blue Angels scored a 25-11, 25-9 and 25-12 triumph. As a team, the Blue Angels had 26 kills, 19 service aces, 31 digs and a pair of blocks, while the Albertus Magnus recorded 16 kills, 26 digs and 15 assists. The balanced Falcon attack saw three different players rack up four or more kills led by freshman outside hitter Ashley David (West Islip, N.Y.) with six. Classmate Jesselle Guzman (Santa Teresa, N.M.) recorded five kills and senior outside hitter Amber Cohens (Hamden, Conn.) added four of her own. On the defensive end, freshman libero Nashalie Bayona (New Haven, Conn.) had a team-high seven digs for AMC and both David and Guzman registered six digs apiece. The biggest factor in the setback for the Falcons was the play at the service line. The hosts committed 19 receiving errors and the guests had just one.

Albertus Magnus scored their second victory against Medgar Evers this week in the finale, defeating the guests by a score of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-12. The Falcons amassed 35 kills, 17 service aces, 39 digs and two solo blocks versus the Cougars. Junior middle hitter Ana Gomez (New Haven, Conn.) led the AMC offensive charge with a game-high 11 kills, while Cohens and David both added six apiece. In the middle, Guzman had a game-high 26 assists for the home team. Defensively, Bayona had a match-best 12 digs for the Falcons.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Wednesday, October 5, with a road Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) showdown versus Mount Ida that is slated to begin at 6:00 pm. Last autumn, the Mustangs blanked the Falcons, 3-0, in New Haven.
