Women's Volleyball Defeats Medgar Evers in Straight Sets

New Haven, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team defeated Medgar Evers in straight sets, 3-0, on Tuesday evening in non-conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

It was a quick first and second set as the Falcons held a 2-0 edge heading into the third frame. Albertus Magnus dominated in set one, 25-4, and continuned to dominate in set two, 25-7. 

Medgar Evers threatened the hosts in the third as the Courgars brought the score to within two, 20-18, following three straight service aces from Shanie Laguerre. However, Albertus Magnus topped the visitors to secure the home win, 25-19.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • At the net, the Falcons recorded a season-high .301 hitting percentage
  • Offensively, Albertus Magnus dominated on the serving  as the hosts tallied a season-high 26 service aces, including a season-high 14 service aces from senior Nicole Beard (Shelton, Conn.).
  • Medgar Evers finished the set with five kills, six service aces, 30 digs, a block and two assists.
  • Senior Ana Gomez (New Haven, Conn.), freshman Genesis Cora Luquis (Meriden, Conn.) and freshman Kimberly Keller (Bridgeport, Conn.) led the offensive attack with seven kills each.
  • Along with the 14 service aces, Beard assisted 16 of the Falcons' 31 kills.
  • Sophomore Jesselle Guzman (Santa Teresa, N.M.) recorded a team-high 10 digs.

Albertus Magnus returns to action this Thursday, Sept. 14 as the Falcons host in-state foe Mitchell College. First serve is set for 7 pm.
