Women's Volleyball Defeats UMaine Presq. and Becker in Non-Conference Action

Leicester, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team defeated UMaine Presque Isle and host Becker College on Saturday afternoon at Leicester Gymnasium in a non-conference tri-match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Albertus Magnus took the 2-0 lead over UMaine Presq. Isle after taking set one and set two by the scores of 25-14 and 25-20. However, the Owls cut the Falcons' lead in half, 2-1, following a 32-30 third set victory.

The Falcons secured the fourth and final set, 25-11.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • The Falcons were led offensively by a trio of double-digit scorers, including double-doubles from Geneis Cora Luquis (Meriden, Conn.) and Delaney Ruiz (Meriden, Conn.).
  • Freshman Kimberly Keller (Bidgeport, Conn.) recorded a game-high 11 kills.
  • The Owls were led by Maddi Thweat who recorded a double-double, 10 kills and 11 digs.
  • Albertus Magnus held a 45-27 edge in kills as well as hit .138 at the net.
  • Sophomore Jesselle Guzman (Santa Teresa, N.M.) recorded a season-high 29 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED

With the match tied at 1-1, Becker would take the 2-1 lead heading into set four, following the 25-20 third set win.

Despite hitting .095 in the fourth, Albertus Magnus was able to send the match into a fifth deciding set after defeating Becker 25-15.

Down by two, 13-11, Albertus Magnus tied the final set 13-13, forcing the hosts to use a timeout. After the short break, a kill from Cora Luquis and a service ace by Guzman secured the road win for the Falcons.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Cora Luquis and Ruiz recorded another impressive showing as the duo recorded their second double-double of the day.
  • Five players for Albertus Magnus registered in double-figures in digs.
  • Kayla Dupree posted a team-high 14 kills for the hosts.
  • Becker led in the digs with a 110-96 edge.
  • Along with the double-double, Cora Luquis recorded a career-high 16 kills.
