Women's Volleyball Defeats the College of Staten Island

Staten Island, N.Y. - The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team defeated the College of Staten Island, 3-0, on Thursday evening in non-conference play to improve to 13-10 on the season. Tonight's match was the first in the series since 1994, and it marked Albertus Magnus' first ever win against Staten Island.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Staten Island and Albertus Magnus battled early in the opening set before the Falcons found themselves ahead by nine, 18-9, entering a timeout. Two late kills by Margaret O'Malley-Rebovich got the hosts closer, but Albertus Magnus was able to skate away with a 25-17 win.

The Dolphins opened set two with the early 11-7 lead, but the Falcons managed to outscore the hosts 10-1, powered by two kills each from Ashley David (West Islip, N.Y.) and Genesis Cora Luquis (Meriden, Conn.). Staten Island found a way to break the visitors' run, but the Falcons took the middle set, 25-14.

Albertus Magnus carried the momentum into the third set and found themselves ahead 20-14 following two kills from David. The Falcons were able to keep the Dolphins at bay to secure the road sweep, 25-18.

INSIDE THE STATS

  • Freshman Genesis Cora Luquis (Meriden, Conn.) and senior Nicole Beard (Shelton, Conn.) recorded a pair of double-doubles in the Falcons win over the Dolphins.
  • Freshman Kimberly Keller (Bridgeport, Conn.) paved the way for the Falcons with a team-high 11 kills, while Luquis rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 kills to go along with 10 digs and six service aces.
  • Beard assisted 28 kills as well as tallied two kills, 13 digs and three service aces.
  • The visitors finished the evening hitting .295 at the net behind an impressive 40-kill performance.
  • Margaret O'Malley-Rebovich led the hosts with six kills.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 14 as the Falcons host Saint Joseph's of Maine and Rivier University in a GNAC tri-match. Game times are set for 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
