New Haven, Conn. - This past weekend, the Albertus Magnus College women's softball team gave back to their community by helping out at the Special Olympics Connecticut-Unified Sports Fall Festival on Saturday at Kennedy Memorial Field in East Haven.
The Albertus Magnus College softball players performed a variety of different services on Saturday for the unified sports teams, including keeping the scorebook for the games, keeping score, and announcing the games. In addition, the Albertus softball team also directed a skills camp for the players, wherein they taught the players various fundamental softball skills, such as throwing, proper running technique, and fielding, along with different drills designed to improve their abilities.
Finally, the Albertus softball team assisted in the "opening games" ceremony by helping the unified players run the Special Olympics torch around the bases and throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Off the field, the Albertus softball team shared a meal with the unified sports teams and got to know the players on a more personal level, strengthening the bonds that were developed between the unified sports teams, the Albertus softball team, and the community over the weekend.

Albertus Magnus College, founded in 1925 by the Dominican Sisters of Peace, is a Catholic College in the Dominican Tradition. It is recognized as a Top 100 Regional University in the north by US News & World Report Best Colleges guide for 2019. The College has an enrollment of 1,500 students in its traditional undergraduate program, accelerated adult degree programs, and 12 graduate programs, including a new Master of Public Administration and the only Master of Arts in Art Therapy and Counseling in Connecticut. In the last few months, the College received two significant federal grants, $300,000 from the Department of Justice and a $2 million Title III grant from the Department of Education.
