Softball Falls to Albertus Magnus in GNAC First Round, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team saw its 2024 season come to a close Tuesday afternoon, falling in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) First Round on the road at rival Albertus Magnus College (AMC) at the Shea Softball Complex in New Haven, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays conclude their season at 16-23 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a scoreless opening inning, the Falcons would grab a 3-0 lead after the bottom of the second.
  • The Blue Jays would get on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, as junior Alyssa Roberts (Naugatuck, Conn.) hit a single to center field, allowing junior shortstop Jenna Zup (Berlin, Conn.) to score and cut the gap to 3-1.
  • USJ nearly got a second run in the top of the sixth, as sophomore infielder Alexis Volinsky (Berwick, Maine) and Zup got on first and second with one out.
  • Roberts then notched a timely two-out single to the outfield, but the Falcons were able to barely throw Volisnky out at home, preventing USJ from tacking on another run.
  • The Falcons would shut the door in the seventh, striking out the Blue Jays in order, picking up the win, 3-1, and advancing to the next stage of the GNAC Playoffs.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Roberts paced the team at the plate, batting 2-for-3 on the day.
  • Sophomore Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.) got the start inside the circle, picking up the loss (6-10) after allowing three runs off seven hits, striking out four Falcons across 6.0 innings.
