Blue Jays Drop Home Doubleheader to Rival Albertus Magnus Wednesday Afternoon

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team dropped a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division doubleheader at home against rival Albertus Magnus College (AMC) Wednesday afternoon at the USJ Softball Field in West Hartford, Conn. The Falcons took game one via the run rule, 11-0 after six innings in game one before completing the sweep with a 3-1 victory in game two. With the results, the Blue Jays move to 13-21 overall, 5-9 in the GNAC and 3-7 in the South Division, while the Falcons move to 19-16 overall, 11-3 in the GNAC and 7-3 in the South Division.

GAME ONE | AMC 11, USJ 0 (6 INNINGS)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
  • AMC tacked on five more runs in the top of the fourth, extending the gap to 7-0.
  • The visitors added four more runs in the top of the sixth, and continued to hold the Blue Jays at the plate, taking game one, 11-0, after six innings.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Sophomores Emma Carpenter (Brooklyn, Conn.) and Devan Fox (Granville, Mass.) recorded the lone hits in game one for USJ.
  • Junior Alyssa Roberts (Naugatuck, Conn.) got the start in game one, picking up the loss (4-8) after allowing six runs off eight hits and throwing one strikeout across 3.1 innings.
  • Sophomore Kaitlyn Ouellette (Wolcott, Conn.) pitched the remainder 2.2 innings in relief, allowing five runs, only one of which was earned, off four hits and throwing one strikeout.

GAME TWO | AMC 3, USJ 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Game two was a ture pitchers duel as starting pitcher sophomore Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.) held the Falcons at the plate during the opening five innings of play.
  • USJ rewarded their pitcher in the bottom half of the fifth, as junior outfielder Izzy Milardo (Middlefield, Conn.) hit a ball to right field that got past the AMC outfielder, allowing Milardo to record an inside the park homerun, establishing a 1-0 USJ lead.
  • However, the Falcons would score twice in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead, before adding an insurance run in the top of the seventh to take home the win in game two, 3-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • The homerun was the first of the year for Milardo.
  • Six different Blue Jays recorded hits in game two.
  • Fekete pitched a complete game in game two, picking up the loss (6-8) after allowing three runs off eight hits and throwing five strikeouts.

UP NEXT
The Blue Jays head on the road for the final time in the 2024 regular season, heading to Chicopee, Mass., for a GNAC doubleheader at Elms College on Saturday, April 27. First pitch of game one at Cheryl R. Condon Field is slated for 1:00 p.m.
