Men's Golf Finishes GNAC Championship in Second Place

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Monks of Saint Joseph's College of Maine came back on day two to win the 2021-22 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday afternoon at the New Haven Country Club. The Monks finished the two-day event, hosted by Albertus Magnus College, with a team score of 646 (+86) to edge the hosts' Falcons with a score of 670 (+110). 

Coming in third place was Dean College with a two-day score of 717 (+157). Emmanuel (Mass.) College finished fourth overall with a score of 766 (+206), while Elms College took fifth as they had three golfers that did not take part in day two.

Following today's win, Saint Joseph's College received the league's automatic qualifier to the 2022 NCAA Division III Tournament, which will be held May 10-13 at the Mission Inn Resort and Club in Orlando, Fla.

PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS

Saint Joseph's freshman Drew Mathieu took home both GNAC Player and Rookie of the Year by winning low medalist honors with a combined score of 159 (+19). The rookie finished tied for the low round of the day, shooting an eight-over 78. Mathieu was closely followed by Albertus' Charles Kristofak (West Hartford, Conn.) and Ryan Sember (Branford, Conn.), who finished tied for second with a score of 161 (+21).

Rounding out the GNAC All-Conference Team was the Monks' Sean McDonough (162) and Jacob Laplume (163) in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Michael Menico from Emmanuel (Mass.) and Mike Keefe from Dean finished in a two-way tie for sixth with a score of 165 (+25). Finishing eighth overall was Saint Joseph's College Cade Buckley, who posted a score of 166 (+26), just one stroke shy of tying Menico and Keefe.

Saint Joseph's College Trevor Flanagan and Albertus' David Aquavia (Oakville, Conn.) closed out the top 10 with a ninth and 10th place showing, behind a final score of 167 (+27) and 172 (+32), respectively. Dean's Ethan Lessard also posted a strong performance finishing 11th overall with a combined score of 176 (+36).
