Falcons Blanked by No. 10 Wentworth and No. 8 Lasell in GNAC Action

New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College men's volleyball team dropped a pair of GNAC matches in a tri-match versus No. 10 Wentworth and No. 8 Lasell College on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons dropped the opener, 3-0, to the Leopards before falling to the Lasers, 3-0, in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Despite recording a team hitting percentage of .231, the Falcons fell short in set one, 25-10.

Albertus Magnus kept within reach of the Leopards to start off the second set, but a kill from Xhuljo Zyba sparked a run for the visitors, pushing their lead to eight, 11-3. Joshua Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) cut the lead to within six, 16-10, but Wentworth would close out the set with a 9-3 run to take a 2-0 edge heading into set three.

Wentworth and Albertus Magnus battled in third set as the Falcons cut the visitors' lead to one, 12-11, following a kill from Turner. However, the Leopards would go on to score eight straight points to take the 20-11 lead. A service error by Wentworth stopped the run giving Albertus Magnus a chance to catch-up, but the Falcons fell 25-14 in the final set.

INSIDE THE STATS

  • Joshua Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) led the offensive unit with eight kills, and six digs while Brian Reyes (Danbury, Conn.) added four kills, an assist, three digs and a block assist.
  • The Falcons recorded a stats line of 14 kills, 14 assists, a service aces, 16 digs and six block assists.
  • Wentworth was led by Brian Drouse who recorded 12 kills, an assist, a dig and a block assist.
  • Alijah McGee (Stratford, Conn.) assisted 13 of the Falcons 13.

MATCH 2: Lasell 3 | Albertus Magnus 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lasell and Albertus Magnus battled back-and-fourth over the first few points as well as forced four ties until the Lasers found themselves up 19-13 causing the Falcons to call a timeout. Following the short break, Laser sealed the first set victory with a 6-1 run.

Albertus Magnus trailed Lasell early 8-3 before an attack error by Felix Rivas (Danbury, Conn.) gave the Lasers a 10-point lead, 17-7, forcing Albertus to use a timeout. Coming out of the break, Rivas broke up the run with a hard kill, but the visitors would score three-straight points before taking set two, 25-12.

The Lasers dominated in set three tallying 16 kills and a team hitting percentage of .609 to secured the final set and match 25-13.

INSIDE THE STATS

  • Along with Turner, Felix Rivas (Danbury, Conn.) recorded a team-high six kills.
  • As a team, Albertus recorded 16 kills, 16 assists, three service aces, 19 digs and three blocks.
  • Lasell finished the match 35 kills, 30 assists, 10 service aces, 24 digs and 10 blocks.
  • Three different players led the Lasers' offensive unit with seven kills apiece.
