Falcons Drop 3-2 Decision at Saint Joseph College

The Albertus Magnus softball team fell to Saint Joseph College 3-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Friday in the first game of the afternoon double-header.

With the loss, the Falcons move to 6-9 overall and 2-5 in GNAC play, while Saint Joseph improved to 8-9 on the year.

The Falcons took an early lead in the opening inning as Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) recorded an RBI single through the left side of the infield to score Brittney Urciuoli (Newington, Conn.) from second after the freshman registered a double with one out on the board.

Two runs in the third inning gave St. Joe's a 2-1 lead before the Falcons tied the ballgame in the fifth inning as Krista LaBissoniere (Meriden, Conn.) scored the Falcons' second run of the contest. Shannon Knox (Hamden, Conn.) struck out but reached first as the Blue Jays' catcher recorded a late throw to first base, which allowed LaBissoniere to score.

Saint Joseph scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Stephanie Valerio recorded a one out triple before scoring on a base hit to centerfield from Emily Hummel.

Danielle Thuerling (Wallingford, Conn.) threw the complete game as she gave up eight hits and three earned runs, while she struck out four batters. The Blue Jays' Kristina Torres gave up six hits and one earned run in her third win of the season.
