Softball Edged by Saint Elizabeth 5-4 in Game 1

The College of Saint Elizabeth edged the Albertus Magnus softball team 5-4 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon. Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) led the Falcons in the loss with a 2-for-2 performance along with two walks and an RBI.

In a game of back-and-forth, St. Elizabeth came out on top as a two-run sixth inning lifted the Screaming Eagles over the Falcons.

Albertus took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Maio RBI single to center as Brittney Urciuoli (Newington, Conn.) recorded her second triple of the season before scoring the Falcons' first run of the game. The Eagles tied the game at one in the bottom of the frame before the Falcons added another run in the third only to be matched once against by St. Elizabeth.

With the score knotted at two, Albertus took another one-run lead in the fourth inning as back-to-back walks put runners on for Urciuoli, who registered an RBI single to center to give the Falcons back the lead. The Eagles tied the game at three in the fifth before adding two runs in the sixth thanks to an Albertus error and an RBI single.

The Falcons were able to get one run back on the scoreboard as Maio led off the frame with a walk before freshman Aimee Mirto (Hamden, Conn.) singled to left to put two on with no outs. A sacrifice bunt put both runners into scoring position before a bunt single by Krista LaBissoniere (Meriden, Conn.) cut the lead to one. Unfortunately, the Falcons' rally was cut short as the inning ended on two fly outs.

Danielle Thuerling (Wallingford, Conn.) took the loss to fall to 7-12 on the year. She gave up just three hits but walked four and allowed three earned runs on the afternoon.
