Albertus Softball Defeats Gordon 5-4

Freshman Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) scored the game-winning run on a passed ball in the top of the seventh inning as the Albertus Magnus softball team defeated Gordon College 5-4 on Friday to conclude its Spring Break trip down in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

With the win, the Falcons even their record at 4-4 on the year, while Gordon falls to 2-6 overall.

In the top of the seventh inning, Puccilli singled with two outs before advancing into scoring position on a passed ball.  Krista LaBissoniere (Meriden, Conn.) was then walked to put runners on first and second before Gordon's Kelly Beardslee took the mound for Skylar Bareford.

An infield single by Jamie Vesciglio (Stratford, Conn.) loaded the bases before all runners advanced on a passed ball, including the eventual game-winning run as Puccilli gave the Falcons a 5-4 advantage.

The Falcons gave up one hit in the bottom of the seventh but a line out and two ground outs secured the victory for the Falcons.

Albertus opened the contest with a two-run first inning as senior Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, Conn.) connected on an RBI double to centerfield to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.

Gordon tallied a run in the bottom of the third as an error in the infield for the Falcons allowed Kara Pepper to score after Pepper tripled to get into scoring position.

Albertus scored runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-1 lead before Gordon used a three-run sixth inning to tie the game.  Four hits, including an RBI single by Hope Zigterman, allowed Gordon to knot the score at four.

The Falcons answered in the seventh to earn their fourth victory of the season.

Aimee Mirto (Hamden, Conn.) recorded an RBI single to left to plate a runner in the fifth inning for the Falcons, while a groundout by Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) allowed Veronica Hribko (East Haven, Conn.) to score the Falcons' lone run in the sixth.

Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn.) earned the win as she allowed 11 hits and two earned runs in six innings of work. Manning also struck out three batters.

The Falcons return to action on Friday, March 22 when they host Suffolk in their home opener beginning at 5:00 p.m. at West Haven High School.
