Falcons Drop 8-6 Decision at Emerson

In the first game of the Sunday afternoon double-header, the Albertus Magnus softball team was defeated by Emerson 8-6 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play in Boston.

The Lions, who were the 2012 Regular Season GNAC Champions, scored five runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth to defeat the Falcons. The loss moves the Falcons to 4-6 on the year and 0-3 in GNAC play.  Emerson improved to 6-7 overall and 3-0 in league action with the win.

The Falcons jumped ahead early with a run in the first inning as Brittney Urciuoli (Newington, Conn.) led off the contest with a bunt single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Urciuoli then stole third before scoring on a throwing error by the Lions' catcher.  In the second frame, Krista LaBissoniere (Meriden, Conn.), who led off the inning with a bunt single, scored on a wild pitch to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.

Emerson scored five runs in the fourth inning on three hits and three Falcon errors.  The Lions scored all five unearned runs with two outs in the frame.

Albertus tied the ballgame at five with three runs in the top of the fifth as a pinch hit double by Aimee Mirto (Hamden, Conn.) led the Falcons' charge as freshman Michelle Barillaro (Meriden, Conn.) scored from second to cut the Emerson lead to two.  With two runners in scoring position, Jamie Vesciglio (Stratford, Conn.) doubled down the left field line to tie the game at five.

Emerson answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame.  A bases loaded walk put the Lions ahead by one run before two runs scored on a Brittany Rochford single to center.

Down by three, the Falcons plated one run in the top of the seventh inning as Vesciglio added her third RBI of the contest.  The junior transfer finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Urciuoli added a 3-for-5 performance with a run scored.  Senior Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, Conn.) added two hits and one run.

Jackie Medina (Bridgeport, Conn.) walked four and struck out one in six innings of work.  She also allowed three earned runs.

Emerson's Lauren Jacaruso allowed 14 hits to Albertus as the Falcons scored six runs and were struck out five times.
