Falcons Fall to Simmons 8-0 in Five Innings

The Albertus Magnus softball team fell to Simmons College 8-0 in five innings in game one of the Saturday afternoon Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader in Boston.

Simmons (9-4) struck early, scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Lauren Backhaus plated Simmons' first run of the ballgame with an RBI single in the frame. For the sophomore pitcher, it was her sixth RBI of the season.

Albertus put a runner into scoring position in the top of the second inning as Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) doubled to centerfield with one out on the scoreboard but the Sharks were able to battle their way out of the inning.

Simmons added two runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead before scoring four in the fourth to take a 7-0 advantage. In the fifth inning, the Sharks plated their final run thanks to an RBI single from Alaina DeNoncour.

Backhaus earned the win, her sixth of the season, as she gave up just three hits, while striking out five Falcons.

Albertus' Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn.) took the loss as she allowed 13 hits in 4.2 innings of work. She also walked four and gave up all eight runs.
