Falcons Outlast Saint Joseph 4-3

The Albertus Magnus softball team broke a one-all tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take an eventual 4-3 victory over the University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays on Friday night in West Haven. An RBI single by Jamie Vesciglio (Stratford, Conn.) plated the go-ahead run in the frame before a double by Veronica Hribko (East Haven, Conn.) added two more runs for the Falcons, including the eventual game winner.

Saint Joseph got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Patty Sciglimpag doubled to lead off the frame before moving to third on a ground out. She later scored as Mary Sciglimpag recorded a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Albertus (10-11, 3-6 GNAC) tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Brittney Urciuoli (Newington, Conn.) singled to lead off the frame.  Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) recorded an RBI single to plate Urciuoli as Albertus tied the contest at one.

After the Falcons' three-run inning gave them a 4-1 lead, Saint Joseph scored two runs in the top of the seventh but the Blue Jays' rally was cut short as Albertus secured the game victory with the final out on a fly out to right field.

The Blue Jays' Emily Hummel finished the contest 2-for-4 with two RBI as she became the Saint Joseph all-time hits leader. Hummel took the loss as she gave up four runs on seven hits, while striking out five batters.

Albertus was led by seven players with one hit each, while Hribko added an RBI multiple-base hit.

Amanda Green (Shelton, Conn.) earned her first victory of the season as she allowed three runs and eight hits in 6.2 innings of work.  Jackie Medina (Bridgeport, Conn.) came in for the save in the final inning.
